Ventic is on Google Play

Android phones, tablets and Android TV can now install Ventic from the Play Store and let Play keep it up to date. The APK is still on GitHub, and nothing changes on the desktop.

Ventic has been accepted on Google Play. On an Android phone, a tablet, an Android TV or a Google TV, search for Ventic in the Play Store, or open the listing from the download page, and install it like any other app. No unknown-sources switch, no Downloader, no address typed with a remote.

The same app

  • The package on Play is built by the same release workflow on GitHub as the APK, from the same tag. It is the same app, with the same empty source list on first launch.
  • Play updates it on its own schedule. A Play copy never downloads an APK to replace itself: when a newer release is out, the badge in the toolbar opens the Play listing instead.
  • The APK stays where it was, on GitHub and behind ventic.tv/apk. Fire TV has no Play Store, so the sideloading guide stays too.

Pick one and stay with it

Google Play signs what it distributes with its own key, not with the key the GitHub APK is signed with. Android only installs an update signed by the same key as what is already there, so the Play copy and the APK cannot install over each other.

  • Already using the APK? Nothing has to change. It keeps updating itself from GitHub, as before.
  • Moving to Play means uninstalling the APK first, which removes its library. Settings → Account writes a backup file beforehand, and the Play copy reads it back.
