Every source read properly, and an Android freeze found
Results read the same whatever addon they came from, a freeze on Android devices with an SD card is gone, a film from your own disk can be cast, and the home screen looks like a home screen.
Most of this release is about the sources you add yourself. Every addon draws its results its own way, and Ventic only really read one of those ways - so a source could search perfectly well and still come back with nothing worth playing. It now reads all of them.
Results read the same whatever source they came from
The stream protocol fixes the fields but not the text: the size, the seeder count, the release name and where the result came from all live in one display title that every addon lays out differently - different icons, different order, different lines, and some don't put the release name in it at all. Ventic read that title by position, so one layout worked and the rest arrived as "unknown", with no size, no quality and no seeders. Each field is now found by what it looks like rather than by the line it sits on, which also gives a source nobody here has ever tried a fair chance of being read correctly.
- A swarm nobody counted is not a dead one. A result resolved by a debrid service names no seeders - that is not zero, but it was read as zero, and zero is dropped as unplayable. For some sources that was the entire search coming back empty. Those results now rank just below the copies whose swarm is actually known, and show ? instead of 0.
- GiB weighs what GB does, sizes and seeder counts are read wherever in the text they appear, and 2160p and 4k are one chip in the picker rather than two.
- An addon's error message is not something to play. "Unable to get metadata", and the tip-jar entry some addons return with every search, were being offered as releases - and a link with no size and no quality can out-rank a real copy.
- A film called Seed no longer has 2007 seeders, and a .ts file is read as a container rather than as a telesync and thrown away.
The Android freeze
"It just freezes after a while and becomes completely unresponsive - on some devices." The cause was ours, and it was measuring the drive. To find out whether a volume can hold a file bigger than FAT32's 4 GiB limit there is no way to ask, only to try - so Ventic wrote a 4 GiB file. On the thread that blocks the page. Every ten seconds.
- On built-in storage that costs nothing, because the filesystem allocates no blocks, which is why most phones never showed it. On exFAT - every SD card - it allocates and zeroes four real gigabytes, on removable flash, while the page waits for it to finish.
- It is now measured once per drive, on a thread of its own, and only on removable storage: built-in storage can't be FAT32 in the first place. A phone with no card slot never pays for it at all.
- Ventic also deletes the leftover probe file at startup, which was the "4.3 GB used on a fresh install" half of the same report.
Cast a film you already own
Casting a film opened from this machine's own disk used to be the one thing the cast button hid itself for - there was no way for the other device to open a path that only exists here. The read-only mirror that already serves torrents to the TV now serves that one file too, and only while it is being cast: the request names no path, the mirror knows one file, and the next cast or the Stop button replaces it.
- On the receiving screen, a cast film's own subtitle tracks are now read from the device that sent it rather than from the receiver's own engine - which is how a film could arrive carrying somebody else's subtitle list.
- Hovering the seek bar no longer pulls preview frames across the network from the other device.
The home screen
The hero panel is taller, and the artwork keeps its own 16:9 shape and dissolves into the panel instead of being stretched across it - which used to crop out exactly the half with the faces in it. Each title shows its own wordmark where there is one, all five preloaded together, so walking the row swaps one picture for another rather than flashing plain text. The five posters underneath are now pills: they were a second row of cards competing with the art, and they are still real buttons a remote and a thumb can both reach.
Improve performance does more
The setting now also hides the background artwork rather than just un-blurring it, and turns the sidebar and menus solid. Unblurred, that art was a sharp photograph behind every line of text - hard going on a laptop and worse across a room - and a layer that isn't drawn is the cheapest one there is. The chosen artwork is only hidden; it comes back with the switch.
Fixes
- A ventic:// link is asked about once. The link the app was launched with was remembered, not cleared, so every reload asked again about a source you had already turned down.
- Menus and dialogs blur as they open. The frosted glass used to pop in a quarter-second late.
- The player does less work while its bar is hidden. The whole bottom bar was redrawing every frame for the length of the film, where nobody could see it.
- A grid of shows is lighter. Every card was scanning every episode ever played, for a bar that only wants its own show's handful.
- Search no longer drops a result. Films and shows are two separate id spaces, so a film and a series that shared an id lost whichever came second.
- A startup race on Linux is gone.
- Resume on the Downloads page shows a download icon rather than a play triangle - it starts a transfer, it doesn't play anything.
- The player's own on-screen messages - resume point, volume, audio track, subtitle delay and sync - were English wherever you were. They, and all the new text above, are translated into all 72 languages.
